First tacks #4 – Logging a task in the logbook

After adding equipment on board, you have learned how to set maintenance reminders and run down checklists. In this fourth tip on how to make the most of Ready4Sea, we’re now going to cover your boat’s maintenance log.

Recording what you’ve done and when

If you sail infrequently, you tend not to remember what you did or didn’t do, let alone when. On the other hand, if you’re often out on your boat, your memories tend to get mixed up 😵‍💫 You might forget to change your oil on time because it seems like you’ve done it not long ago.

In either situation, it’s essential to keep a maintenance log, in the same way you keep a logbook when you’re out on the water. Ready4Sea stores this history for you, as soon as you document your work in the app: it’s the maintenance log.

💭 Bear in mind that when you resell your boat, the regularity and thoroughness of your maintenance will instil confidence. This is an essential criterion, which can justify a higher resale price! 🤩

Three possible ways of recording an event

Let’s now look at how to register maintenance, repairs and other events on board. In the Ready4Sea application, this can happen in three instances:

1. Based on a reminder

➡️ Display the relevant maintenance reminder.
➡️ Click on the “Mark as done” button.
➡️ Append any notes you wish.
➡️ Specify the next due date (if this is a recurring reminder).

2. Using a checklist

➡️ When you complete a checklist, it is added to the log. Each completed task is automatically recorded as completed.

3. Directly in the logbook

➡️ If your action relates to a task that has no current reminder and is not on any checklist, it can still be logged.
➡️ In the log, click on “Add +”.
➡️ Specify the subject of the reminder.
➡️ Add a label for this event, and write down any notes you may have.
➡️ Finally, specify the next deadline, if any.

Next steps

✅ Congratulations, you now know how to log a task or event in the maintenance logbook. It will build up over the months. This will bring confidence and peace of mind to others, such as potential buyers. And to yourself too!

NB: The timestamp of events cannot be modified, which is normal: the idea is that each event should be indisputably traceable. You can, however, record today events that took place some time ago, by using the date field.
